Safety Behaviours

At work we were introduced to an initiative that will be rolled out fully in the new year: safety behaviours.

The introduction went along the lines of: you all know how to behave in a church, and how to behave in a pub. These behaviours will be different and we want to ensure everyone knows how they are expected to behave at work.

At first this sounded all fine and good. But the more I thought about it, the more it bothered me. Generally speaking, I would like my behaviours to be natural. I don't want to have to be mindful of my behaviours when I walk into a church, I would like my natural tendancies to be respectful without effort. Similarly, I would like my behaviours that relate to safety to be automatic. I want to ensure that I act in a safe manner at all times, not just at work.

Perhaps these behaviours should not depend on the location they are carried out in.
