For the last couple of months, I have been attempting to build a graphic that includes some advanced features. These features are used in other graphics but I wanted to combine them in the one page.
Unfortunately the scripts behind these features do not play nicely together. I have therefore had to spend the last couple of months smashing my head against the proverbial wall in an attempt to understand what is causing the problems.
I feel that I should point out that I wasn't working on the problem solidly the whole time, but spending a couple of hours every couple of days trying to make progress. After looking at the same code and not managing to learn anything, I would give up for the day and move onto something else.
Even though I started out from virtually the same position as yesterday, and every other day this year, today something clicked. I found the section of code that was causing the problems and was able to fix it almost instantly. It is a wonderful feeling. The task that was filling me with dread every time I thought about it suddenly seems like a dream to work on. All the other simple changes that were blocked before can now be carried out with ease, again increasing my sense of accomplishment.
Unfortunately within five minutes of making my breakthrough I had to attend a couple of back to back meetings that generated lots more tasks for me. In this case the euphoria of the solved problem didn't last, but on the up side, I have lots of other tasks and problems to fix. And after that last one, these all ought to be simple.
