Personal Algorithms

Yesterday I mentioned one of my personal algorithms of life. To be honest, I had never considered it as such until I was writing about it but that is what it is.

And it isn't the only one. Thinking about it now, the there are lots of these algorithms I use. They are rules I have come up with to help me make better decisions, particularly at times when I don't trust myself.

Another example is choosing to cycle or drive to work:

  • Is there bike broken and unavailable?
  • Is there a weather warning in place that would make it dangerous to cycle?
  • Is there a specific event (in my calendar) that will require me to leave work late or get home early?

If the answer to all three is no, then I am just being lazy and I should cycle.
